Case Description
I recently went to the dentist to start getting my teeth in order. I had a dentist start a root canal and not finish it (I only had $500 at the time, no insurance, and I was pregnant) a few years ago and it had caused the tooth next to it to get infected. The new dentist said that the partial tooth and the neighboring tooth both had to be pulled. I didn't want to lose the good tooth, but I decided to trust him because he said that the roots weren't any good and a root canal wouldn't last. When he pulled the tooth out the roots were long, white and healthy. I asked him if I could have the tooth, and he said no. He then pointed at two places on the roots (with the tooth right in front of my eyes) that he said were "showing signs of infection".

He had me schedule two appointments for deep scaling at $340 a piece. My insurance only pays $60. He says I have the beginning stages of gum disease, and said that's why my gums were white and bleed easily. In the month since he pulled my teeth my gums have stoped bleeding, and look a lot better because the infection in that tooth is gone.

He said I need to have crowns put on my two top front teeth (the bottom part of both broke off in an accident when I was young) because fillings don't last. I've had the same fillings on them for over 10 years and one just cracked. I also have a temporary cap on one of my molars that I know needs to come off, although it has not gotten infected and he didn't point out anything bad on the xrays. He said I needed one or two fillings, and needed to have fillings replaced. He pointed out fractures or cracks in my old fillings, that previous dentists didn't notice. I guess they could have formed recently.

How do I go about getting the work I need to have done without upseting the dentist? How do I choose a good dentist that is honest? I want to be able to smile again and not feel like hiding everytime I look at my teeth in the mirror. My husband is a medic, and I'm in a police academy, and we have two little ones so we don't have very much money, and can't afford to pay for things that aren't necessary.

Thank you for your time,

-Whitney

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.
Reply: I need lots of dental work and I don't know who to trust.

Hi Whitney

It really sounds to me like you need a second opinion. Often we are able to give you multiple options when it comes to designing a treatment plan for a patient. Sometimes we are better served to be a little more conservative with what we recommend. Somtimes we can spread out the work over a longer period of time in order to help the patient out. Feel free to call my office at 314-567-5612 and I would be more than happy to give you a second opinion (at no charge...please bring along all xrays). I am in St Louis but I have many patients who come here from all parts of the country.
