Case Description
I went to the dentist a little over three weeks ago to have a popcorn kernel removed out of my bottom right gum. After removing the kernel, the dentist said I had a cavity on the bottom left tooth and wanted to fill it before it got bad. I had no pain on the left side whatsoever. I went ahead and allowed her to fill the tooth. She filled it with a resin filling. When the anesthesia wore off a few hours later the pain was excruciating when cold air hit it. Since this was a Friday night and the doctors office was closed, I took advil to curtail the pain over the weekend. By Monday the pain was down to more of an itchy achy type of pain on the inside of the tooth in front of the one she fixed and around the area that feels like it travels up to my ear (jaw area). By now it was not cold sensitive (strange isn't it). The dentist couldn't find anything wrong with the filling nor infection. But she said I had periodontal gum disease and needed to have deep scaling performed. She gave me penicillin for a week to ensure there was not an underlying infection that she didn't see and I made an appointment to have all four of my quadrants cleaned in January. However, after taking the penicillin, th itchy ache semed to not be as irritating , but it was still there. I went back to the entist complaining of the itchy ache and she saw that th filling was a little high. She filed it down. That helped somewaht, the itchy achy sensation seemed to go away after about two days. That was about a week ago. I caught the flue over the Christmas holidays. After breaking my fever on Thursday night, the itchy achy pain came back in the same area Friday night. By the way, it doesn't matter whether I am biting down or not, it's pretty constant. I do have TMJ. However, I did not have this problem prior to the filling. Is it possible that during the filling process, the periodonatal disease was aggravated and as she tends to suggest that deep scaling may fix this itchy ache? Is it possible there's a very bad infection that she can't see? Could I be allergic to the resin filling, I've had many filling in the past with the silver filling without any issue. By the way, this is the first time she's worked on my teeth. She's taken xrays before but not did any work on my teeth until this procedure.

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

these will sometimes frustrate all of us. you had a filling redone. you have had the bite adjusted. we make decisions based on symptoms: does it hurt with cold, with hot, by chewing, does it hurt spontaneously, etc. gum issues usually do not hurt. they are simply diagnosed by bone loss and pocket formation. if there is truly bone loss, then you need the deep cleaning...even if it does not make the itchiness go away. sometimes plastic can irritate teeth. sometimes you need to remove the filling and put it back in again with a base underneath it. this might be the answer. without seeing things in person, this is the best i can come up with. good luck...i hope this information helps you discuss things better with your dentist.
