Case Description
A few days ago I had a root canal performed on an left upper molar. Two to three days following this procedure I had excurciated pain in that tooth. I followed up with antibiotics and pain meds. After three doses of the antibiotic the pain in the tooth has eased slightly, but now I have noticed that I have pain in my left ear. It feels like pain associated with an ear infection. Is it possible that my tooth pain was caused by an infection that now has moved to my ear? Or could this be some type of muscular pain as felt in TMJ or TMD? How long should I expect this pain? Is this a situation that I may need to inform my DR. about or will this condition improve with time and continued use of my antibiotic? Is there anything else I can do for relief?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description,
special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more
reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors.
Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

i would definitely call the dentist who did the root canal. you are on the antibiotic so most likely it is not infection in that tooth. when you do a root canal you do keep you mouth open and stretched for a long time. this often does lead to TMJ issues. but i cannot definitively diagnose this over the internet. before you jump to that TMJ answer, you need to rule out that the tooth is causing the problem. this is why you need to talk to the dentist. if it is TMJ you can try moist heat, anti-inflammatories, etc. If the bite is off, you can adjust it. if it is the tooth, you need to evaluate the root canal. good luck...let me know if you have any other questions.jeff dalin, dds314-567-5612jeff@dfdasmiles.comwww.dfdasmiles.com
